On My Own Terms
Movement as Medicine: Healing Through Mindful Movement Practices

In a world that often prioritizes productivity over presence and expectations over individuality, the connection between our bodies and minds can feel like an afterthought. Yet, movement is one of the most profound ways to heal and reconnect with ourselves.
For me, movement—particularly dance—has always been medicine. It’s been my sanctuary, my form of self-expression, and my cultural inheritance. In West African traditions, dance is more than just movement; it’s a sacred act of healing and connection. It’s how stories are told, emotions are released, and communities come together. Dance, in its purest form, is a language of the soul.
Yet, in environments that suppress self-expression, the power of movement is often diminished. Living in such spaces can lead to a lack of confidence and even self-doubt. When we aren’t allowed to express who we are—whether through words, art, or movement—we risk losing touch with our identity. For me, returning to movement has been a way of reclaiming myself, of healing the parts of me that felt silenced.
Let’s explore how movement can serve as medicine, not only for our physical bodies but also for our minds and spirits.
The Healing Power of Movement
Movement has been used as a form of healing for centuries across cultures. Whether it’s the fluidity of yoga, the rhythmic sway of dance, or the intentional flow of tai chi, these practices share one thing in common: they reconnect us to ourselves.
Here’s how movement heals:
- Releasing Emotions: Emotions are stored in the body, and movement helps release them. Dance, for example, allows you to embody your feelings, turning pain, joy, or uncertainty into something tangible.
- Promoting Mindfulness: Practices like yoga or tai chi anchor you in the present moment. They teach you to listen to your breath, feel the stretch of your muscles, and be fully present in your body.
- Boosting Confidence: Movement reminds you of your strength. Each step, pose, or motion is a celebration of what your body can do. Over time, this builds confidence and helps dissolve self-doubt.
- Reconnecting to Culture and Identity: For many, movement is tied to heritage. For me, West African dance is a way of honoring my ancestors, embracing my identity, and finding healing in the rhythm of tradition.
Mindful Movement Practices to Explore
There are countless ways to incorporate healing movement into your life. Here are three practices to consider:
1. Dance as Expression and Healing
Dance is my first love and remains my most cherished form of movement. It’s where I feel most free, most connected to my spirit. You don’t need to be a professional to benefit from dance—just find a space, turn on some music, and let your body lead.
How to Get Started:
- Create a playlist of songs that resonate with you emotionally.
- Find a private space where you feel safe to move.
- Close your eyes and begin with small, natural movements. Allow your body to interpret the music however it feels.
- Don’t worry about what it looks like—focus on what it feels like.
2. Yoga for Mind-Body Connection
Yoga combines breath and movement to create harmony between body and mind. It’s especially powerful for releasing tension and cultivating self-awareness.
How to Get Started:
- Start with beginner-friendly yoga videos or attend a local class.
- Practice simple poses like Child’s Pose, Cat-Cow, or Downward Dog.
- Pay attention to your breath. Inhale deeply as you stretch, and exhale fully as you release tension.
- Aim for consistency—a few minutes daily can make a big difference.
3. Tai Chi for Flow and Grounding
Tai chi is a gentle martial art that focuses on slow, intentional movements. It’s excellent for grounding yourself and fostering inner peace.
How to Get Started:
- Learn a simple sequence of movements, like “Grasp the Bird’s Tail” or “Wave Hands Like Clouds.”
- Move slowly and focus on transitioning smoothly from one posture to the next.
- Practice outdoors if possible—connecting with nature enhances the grounding effect.
Reclaiming Identity Through Movement
One of the most powerful aspects of mindful movement is how it helps us redefine who we are, free from societal expectations. When you move intentionally, you tap into your body’s innate wisdom and learn to trust yourself again.
For me, this process has been transformative. Through dance, I’ve reclaimed parts of my identity that were overshadowed by external pressures. I’ve found confidence in the sway of my hips, resilience in the stomp of my feet, and freedom in the rhythm of my heartbeat.
You, too, can use movement to reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s through dance, yoga, tai chi, or simply walking in nature, each step is a declaration: I am here. I am worthy. I am free.
